Oh I am laughing so hard because imagine having five grown men in your house doing renovations - imagine all the things they leave around. Now imagine trying to get receipts from these men and asking them to write their name and the house (1 of 3) on the receipt. I find this behavior, which I call "dropping" does not stop at home improvement tools, but extends to clothes on the floor, ice cream pints on the coffee table, butter left on the counter for days on end, toothbrushes on the bathroom sink, and garden hoses laying in the entry path.

Love that part about life squeezing out and time enough later for a clean kitchen -- oh how I wish I could rest in that thought. I may have to quote you on that!

Yes, he actually did find a job within three weeks. It is a tough market though, and he is definitely the exception and not the rule amongst my friends here in Dallas

When at the Lady Doctor yesterday, she kept saying things like: "In your forties..., forties are..., you'll find that forty is...." And I'm all, whoa, lady. Let's not push it. Forty is WAAAAY off for me. 16 months, 10 days, and 15 hours to be exact. I'm glad I have elders like you to lead the way. ;-)

Hi Beth,
I applaud your causes of choice, but I have to add my two cents about the United Way. Before I started serving on a UW committee (Livingston County, MI), I would have agreed. I do not know what our small local staff is paid, but I have seen that work hard, are very caring and they are worth it. The overhead is not so large and they are able to leverage donations to get additional money from grants and such that every dollar donated becomes $1.89 in value for the partner agencies.

Not sure if that is the case in TX, but that is how I see it working here.
I do want to read Mortenson's book. It's on my list...I enjoy your blog!

One thing I've heard about Mortensen's philosophy (though it wasn't in this book, maybe the Stones into Schools?) is that when a girl is educated enough to read the Koran herself and understand un-militant Islam, she won't encourage or allow her sons to become suicide bombers. Bec. apparently jihadists are supposed to have parental permission. So it really is a very direct link between literacy and peace.
